Founded by the Greeks in 729 B.C., Catania is an authentic melting pot of civilisations, with influences from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Aragonese, Spanish and other eras all evident on its land. Catania's historical centre features exuberant late Baroque architecture, promoted after the 1693 earthquake, now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is distinguished by its black volcanic rock exterior.
The city of Catania boasts an extraordinary display of architectural history with its magnificent and striking palaces, beautifully decorated church interiors and cohesive urban design.
Popular activities in Catania include a visit to the intriguing Catania Cathedral and the beautiful Piazza del Duomo, home to the city's iconic Elephant Fountain. Strolling along Via Etnea, the main street, tourists can admire views of Mount Etna and colourful Baroque structures. Another feature of the city's ancient heritage is the Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena, one of the largest Benedictine complexes in Europe. A splendid glimpse of Catania's rich history can also be had at the Roman Theatre and the medieval fortification Castello Ursino.
Catania is located on the east coast of Sicily, at the base of the active volcano, Mount Etna, and faces the Ionian Sea. It is the capital of the region of 58 municipalities known as the Metropolitan City of Catania, which is the seventh largest metropolitan city in Italy.

Catania today is the industrial, logistical and commercial centre of Sicily.
Catania University
Established in 1434, the University of Catania is the oldest in Sicily and one of the oldest in Italy. The king of Aragon, who at the time was king of Sicily too, authorised the foundation of a studium generale with the privilege of granting bachelor’s degrees and licences to students of core disciplines such as theology, canon law, civil law, medicine, philosophy and liberal arts (literature). However, it was not until the recognition from Pope Eugene IV, ten years later, that the University was officially established in the city of Catania.
Today, the educational system is run and overseen by 17 departments. The Medical School for starters, and by two other educational units respectively located in the city of Ragusa and in Syracuse. On average the University has about 38.000 students, with 112 total courses divided into 51 three-year bachelor degree courses, 9 single-cycle master's degree courses (5 or 6 years) and 52 two-year master's degree courses
Conference Venue: Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena
The conference can be hosted at Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena, a late baroque monument and one of the biggest Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The Monastery is 10 minutes-walk from the Cathedral square and at walking distance from the hotels and the lovely city centre.
The construction of the building started in 1500 and has continued until today. It is an example of architectonic integration of different styles through different epochs: you can find a Roman house, the cloisters and a roof garden. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It hosts the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania.
